Alex my friend - only 2 months together. We just celebrated your 6 month birthday after researching and finding your breeder and learning your age...

It hurts so bad.

Yesterday he was fine.

This morning he refused food and drink. He wasn't peppy and talkative. He was puffed up around the head and neck. He just wanted to be petted and sit on my shoulder with his eyes closing from time to time.

He didn't poop normally. Only urine, no feces all morning. Finally in the afternoon there were some feces.

He only accepted a little fresh squeezed carrot juice. That was always his favorite. He threw it up 1/2 hour later.

I found a vet who knew about birds. Took him there early this evening. Alex was perched on the back rest of he passenger seat. He still seemed OK.

Doc said he had a fever but couldn't find anything else wrong. Then he started pooping blood clots.

He died one hour later, I was holding him against my chest all the time, tucked inside my vest. We were driving back home with the antiobiotic. He passed in the car.

I cant stop crying and my head hurts so much. His aviator harness is in the mail....

Thanks for your sympathy. I am in shock.

Dear Renate,

I am so sorry for you.I know what you are going through,as I had the same experience.Right now I have put myself into your place,it hurts I know. How is your little girl taking it?.I dont know where you got your Grey from, but you must go to them and tell them what happend. If you think of getting your self a new grey to help you get through your loss, please find out the most you can about the people who will sell you your grey. Try and find out how they bring these birds into the country(in what conditions). I got Cookie from an importer from Holland,my baby was just 11 months when he died.

When I decided to buy a new baby I couldnt find one in the big pet shop so I waited. O

ne day I saw my Ricco in a pet shop that was terrible,I wish I could buy all the animals from this place to save them.

I knew that I was taking a big risk but I just had to get him ,ever since we have been really happy together, but I am always alert,I still cant get over what happend to cookie.

I hope you get your self a new baby as I know that will help you and your family get over baby Alex.

Take care best wishes for you all.

Nasy and family.

Oh Renate I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Alex, you had him only a short time but long enough to love him with all your heart, I can't imagine how you must feel but know you did all you could for him.

I hope after you have had some time to grieve for Alex that you can find another grey to love for you have much love to give.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and wishes, both on this post and through private messages. It's so great to have a forum like this to back you up. Many people really don't understand how quickly, deeply and unconditionally we can love our animals.

I have posted another topic I would love to have your feedback on. I'm wondering about where I should go from here. I really do want to share my life with another bird (or two - if that makes THEM happier too) but I don't want to make a mistake. Alex was a good bird and I sure hope I will be blessed someday with another good-natured and curious bird like he was, and I have the opportunity to help him reach his full potential. I really miss Alex badly.

Again, my sincere thanks to all of you. One of the many reasons I want to get another AG is because this is one of the best forums I've found and I don't want to leave!

Hi First, you dont need to leave because you dont have a grey at the moment.I understand totally how you feel after loosing Alex. Sometimes its best to hang on a bit untill you feel a bit better. I am a believer in that our pets somehow find us,I a sure one day soon another grey will bless your life as Alex did,but untill then keep visiting us hear and chatting and learning with other grey owners. The people hear are second to none and there is no better place to heal.I am sure others will echo my coments.<br><br>Post edited by: she, at: 2009/04/03 20:16

Renate, it is not required that you own a grey to be a member of this family, just the love of these great beings. You qualify as a grey lover you always have and like all families you are a member for life. I for one want to be there if and when you find a grey that wants to be part of yours and our family. I for one love these journeys and don't want to miss it. So Renate you are stuck with us. You can talk to us about anything you feel; you are family.

Renate Im so sorry. I just read this now and I had no idea. I can feel your pain and it took me back to the night I lost my preious grey Koki. Almost the same details, she was great, suddenly stopped eating, diarhea, then vomit and even after a visit to the vet (a stupid one) she died in my arms and it was very painful. I got another one and I did blood tests and the vet at the hospital confirmed PBFD. I sent her back to the shop cos this is not treatable and it will kill eventually.

What you have to do now in case you wanna get another bird is a very thorogh cleaning and disinfecting of your home as this disease can linger in your home for months and affect another bird.

Please let me know if you need help in that, I will give you all details

I am so sorry again and wanted you to know that there is nothing you couldve done diffeently, its just Gods will.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really sorry for you too. Do you have a bird now, after you gave the second one back? I'm waiting for a local breeder to see if his greys will hatch any eggs and I'm thinking of getting a TAG or two this time around due to the character descriptions. But of course, I'll take whatever he's got in the end cause I miss my little Alex..... Crazy me, I found a CAG window sticker in the pet shop the other day (was going there just to look at their birds...) and I stuck it on the side window of our car.... Now my husband has to look at it whenever he gets in the car HA HA and he complains to me that Alex is responsible for the bird poops on the car!

Anyhow to get serious, I'm shocked at how quickly they can just up and die. Your story does sound very similar to mine but I did not have an autopsy done and the vet did not suggest doing a poop examination. In hindsight, I should have asked for one but this time around at least I'm prepared....

I need to go and chase down the vet who examined Alex when I first got him. Supposedly they did a poop exam on him when he was still in the pet shop and they were supposed to give me the results but they never did.

Anyhow, I cleaned all the parts of the cage with chlorine and hot water and I steamed all the toys and bowls and anything that I could fit in the pot that wouldn't melt. This was the advice I got from Nasy, a member who lives here in Greece. She lost her first bird too.

If you have any more advice I'm happy to listen.

Hi again,

I know you will miss Alex a lot but getting another bird will help you heal quickly.

I got another one around 2 months back, a 5 year old this time, a rehome from a family leaving the country, he is great and so funny but not cuddly as a baby. The baby experience is great though and has no equal...

Anyway for the cleaning , just be sure to clean the house well too, just to be sure that you kill the virus in case it was PBFD cos its really a nasty one and very dangerous for baby parrots. I would dip all the toys and perches in chlorine for at least 10 minutes before washing careflly. I actually washed them in the washing machine afterwards at 90 degrees.... If you have any vents for AC around the house better clean them too cost some feather dust can be hanging in there...check well the corners in your home, there is always a feather here and there and you dont wanna keep any. Also keeping the stuff in the sun for a couple of days is helpful too. I would throw away any left food in order to be on the safe side...

I wish you all the best luck in finding a new baby and I would recommend you go to a good avian vet to make a full blood and feces test to be sure there are no viruses in his blood. By the way in case there is PBFD, the white blood count will be too low indicating loss of imunity...so I would do that at least and please do not buy from the same breeder just in case...

Rana
